How much does a domain cost? [2024]

Average rates are between:

  • $10 - $30 per year for a .com.au domain name

How do I permanently buy a domain name?

It’s currently not possible. Domain names are registered on a limited basis. Most domain names are registered for 1 to 5 years at a time. Once that period expires, you’ll have to renew your domain name registration or the domain will go back onto the market.

If your domain registrant provider offers auto-renewal, then it’s possible to keep your domain name registered for the foreseeable future. Aside from that, you’ll have to keep renewing it yourself.

What is the price for a domain?

Domain names are a relatively cheap business expense for a tradesman. For Australian domain names (.com.au) the price ranges between $10 - $30 per year. These are recommended for better ranking in Google as it can immediately understand your website is an Australian business.

You can get a .com domain name from $10 - $15 per year, but it isn’t recommended to grab one of these simply to save a few dollars. It won’t be localised into Australian search results as quickly as a .com.au website would. It can also be confusing to a potential customer.

You can get even cheaper domain names with strange extensions like .org or .net. These are not recommended for the above reasons. Stick with .com.au and you’ll do fine.

Is buying a domain name a one time purchase?

No, domain names need to be renewed when their registration expires. You can set your domain name registration to auto-renew at the end of each registration period.

When you buy your domain name, you’re actually just registering it for a certain period. Usually 1-5 years. If this period expires and you don’t renew your domain name, then it will go back onto the market.

Can I get a domain name for free?

Yes, there are ways to get a domain name for free. They have downsides, however. For example, Wix offers a free 1 year domain name registration with the purchase of a premium plan. The downside, however, is that it can only be a .com domain name (not .com.au which is what you want). Another downside is that when it renews after the first year, it will cost more than it should.

It’s always best to go direct through a domain registrant provider (or your agency) rather than use third parties who offer free domain names. There will always be a catch.

Do you need a domain name for a website?

Yes, 100% you do. Without a domain name your website wouldn’t be visible online. There would be no way for anyone to enter it in their browser or find it in search results.

Domain names are unique identifiers for your website. Usually the domain name is your business name, although it could also be your business name plus keyword, or even just keywords.

Many platforms like Wix, GoDaddy and Google offer a service where you can make your website with them and adding a domain name is optional. However if you didn’t add your own domain name, it would simply be a variant of theirs. For example, on Wix it would be www.YourUsername.wixsite.com/YourSiteName.

This might work for Sally who sells ceramics as a side hustle, but it won’t be a good look for a professional tradesman.
